There are several things that learners (and faculty) need to be aware of about Indigenous people of Canada in order to fully understand the barriers and issues that many Indigenous peoples face today, such as housing conditions, low income, health problems, child welfare, the criminal justice system, and poverty. The following “component skills” topics must be covered first to understand these:   

• History of colonization and treaties

• Residential Schools  
• Intergenerational Trauma
