WIIFM in HR Management

Students in my Intro to Human Resources Management course may include the following WIIFM comments:

  • required course in my program
  • want to graduate and land a better job or start my own company
  • am interested in the field of HR
  • am more of a numbers person and need to learn the “people stuff”
  • want to maintain a high GPA to enter a future program
  • my parents want me to study business
  • my friend is taking this so I joined along

To help students understand the concept of “why does HR Management matter” … the opening activity is for students to list everything they did that morning before coming to school such as eat breakfast, brush teeth, drive to work, etc.  Probing questions are then asked such as who made your bagel, who sweeps the floor at the gas station, who stocks the toothpaste shelves at the drug store, etc.  Pretty soon students connect with the idea that people make pretty much everything happen in a business, so it would be important to learn more about how to manage them.
