3 Keys
- I loved the idea expressed about considering the syllabus as a hypothesis and carrying out your class as an “experiment”, and then measuring your results after, as the course I’m teaching talks a lot about hypotheses, so it’s a great parallel to what my students will do.
- SoTL also feels like an encouragement to engage in continuous quality improvement (CQI). It’s a reminder that no class or teaching style will likely ever be “perfect” for all learners, and we can always improve as instructors and facilitators to better meet our students’ needs.
- Another thing that is key to SoTL is really diving into what matters most to you and being able to explore that in detail. Your students, your institution, your content, your pedagogy – all of it forms a unique space that we each occupy, and while information that others have compiled can be extremely useful, the application to each of us is unique.
