I use the same or similar analogies for 2 areas of misunderstanding when teaching academic writing. These are integrating quotes and paragraph structure. For the quote, I use the “quote sandwich” where the bread (the top) is the introduction to the quote (According to Srivastava (2021) ), the filling is the quote or paraphrase, and the second slice of bread is the analysis or discussion around the quote. This provides students with a visual structure to follow and is easy to remember.

Similarly, I use the “burger” to go through the structure of a paragraph: Top of the bun is the topic sentence, the condiments/extras is the supporting information, the burger is the reference material (quote or paraphrase) and the bottom of the bun is the discussion/analysis.

I find that using the visual and also breaking each part down into small components really helps students structure their writing and as they develop their skills, they can use this as a basis to develop their own style.

Thanks Jessica – I like this one. I think some of my students think that every burger needs 4 patties and every condiment in the cupboard! This also might be a good way of explaining that the resulting burger can’t be so big it doesn’t fit into your mouth.
