This is a philosophy I take seriously as a professor. I aim to make it very clear for my students why their learning in beneficial/important/necessary. I teach in what is referred to as a “Pathway” program called Pre-Health Sciences. Students in this program are often aiming for nursing degree or diploma programs or other health science related courses. With this, the students aim for high marks but also high skill development and can easily answer this questions for themselves. But when asked to answer “what’s in it for me?” for students I can say: learning APA formatting / style for nursing, critical thinking skills for tougher programs, basic grammar foundations for more complex papers, good grades for acceptance into future programs, the opportunity to research a passion project/topic.
