I currently teach Sport in Canada in the General Education department and find my students generally enjoy photos that assist in understanding the topic at hand. Currently, we are developing an understanding of the challenges of gender equality in the Olympics. I decided to look up the word “Olympics” in each search engine provided. The notable differences in what photo’s are accessible became quite clear. Flickr was very male sport dominated. Creative Commons was extremely landscape based. Pixabuy were digital productions using animation of Olympic characters. MediaWiki provided political/celebrity figures attending the Olympics or athletes involved in scandals at the Olympics. The most useful I found was Unsplash. The quality of photo’s provided equal opportunity to women and men participating in their sports and multiple options for Olympic images that represent the world and not just one nation. I used the keyword search “Olympics” originally but when I realized that I was searching for more of an imagine to represent women in the Olympics. I used the boolean search “Olympics and Women” to get the five women running wearing the different Olympic ring colours. I feel this image will assist in presenting information regarding gender within the Olympics to my students.
