  1. Describe how your selection would support learners’ understanding of an element or concept for a course.

In teaching my students how to write an argumentative essay, I employ the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle to illustrate the concept of crafting a three-point thesis statement.

I guide my students through the analogy, explaining that creating a thesis statement is akin to assembling a 5-piece puzzle. Just as all five pieces must be correctly arranged for the final picture to be complete, a thesis statement comprises two essential components: an idea and the author’s perspective on that idea, which collectively constitute the stance of the thesis. Additionally, three distinct supporting reasons are crucial for reinforcing the stand.

I emphasize to my students that placing each component of the thesis statement in the correct order is essential for the statement to make sense, much like assembling a puzzle where each piece contributes to the overall picture.

  1. Summarize your search strategy (use of keywords, boolean search operators).

I visited the ‘Centre for Ageing Better’ site, entered the word ‘puzzle’ into the search engine, found a few pictures of elderly women playing jigsaw puzzles, and settled on this particular image for my analogy.

  1. Does this image incorporate diversity and inclusion?

Yes, we often associate making puzzles with children and youth, but this image showcases that playing puzzles goes above and beyond age groups. Elderly individuals, too, might enjoy the activity, emphasizing inclusivity and breaking age-related stereotypes.
