In the fall, I will be working with a faculty member on developing an online course on Crip Theory, so I am already thinking about images we will be able to use. This particular image selection I’ve chosen is important given it is very challenging to find images that represent this topic well. I believe it does a good job of representing the concept for this course in a diverse yet positive light.

I have found seeking out these types of images can be very hard, especially ones that also represent diversity as well as strength. I actually spent a lot time googling “free images of diversity, equity, and inclusion” and found a great article that listed the Disabled and Here site as a resource. I am very grateful to have found it.

I believe this image incorporates diversity and inclusion in SO many ways! I love that it contains images that celebrate disabled people of colour as well as varying gender identities. The site has an “LGBTQ+” themed filter that made finding this image even easier. They even include this important statement, “We ask that you be thoughtful in how you put our collection images to use. With captions, we prefer identity-first language, as in “disabled person” rather than ‘person with a disability’.”

They also provide excellent ALT text. The ALT text for this particular image is Three Black and disabled folx (a non-binary person holding a cane, a non-binary person sitting in a power wheelchair, and a femme sitting in a chair) casually smile at the camera while a rainbow pride flag drapes on the wall behind them.”

My only wish is that the availability of more images and more sites like this continues to increase and at a more rapid rate!
