Consider This: Illustrating a writer’s workspace
I browse Unsplash regularly, and found it best suited to find the kind of image I was looking for. When teaching feature writing or long-form journalism, learners are shown the steps taken before the actual writing and publishing process.
A communications professional or journalist often interviews people and transcribes notes. In the 21st Century, they use laptop computers, tablets or mobile devices, so I wanted to find an image that conveys their use, along with traditional notepads and pens.
Below, I’ve cited the image I found, including its source, creator and license:

When it comes to writing, it’s a good idea to set up a comfortable working space. By using this visual, I would hope to illustrate how my learners can think about their logistics and gather materials necessary. It goes beyond the hard skill of writing itself.
I would also hope to promote organization, a key skill in communications and publishing. I selected this image to illustrate the above items, rather than rely solely on verbal or written expectations.
I found that using specific keywords was helpful when selecting this image. I used the terms “feature writing” together, and the Boolean operator “AND” to find images containing both writing and “notetaking.”
