I selected this image to represent my teaching philosophy as it combines the two avenues I want my classroom to represent. The first is an emphasis on traditional methodologies and scaffolding skills while simultaneously creating opportunities for students to get messy and take chances in their engagement with history. The button downed nature of the individual points to this traditional approach, and the painted hands represent the messiness of history. By incorporating these two principles of teaching, I hope to develop safer and accountable learning spaces for students to explore various topics of the past. Since my area of expertise is women and gender history, it is particularly important that students understand where we come from as a discipline while being encouraged to think critically and creatively about paths forward.
