I identified in the empathy map the challenges associated with students problem-solving skills. In some ways I am just ‘guessing’ at why they struggle with completing complex tasks or completing full module readings. Being the mother of 3 highschool boys, I have noticed that their struggle is in motivation to spend time on tasks that require more than a few minutes – literally a few minutes. As soon as it takes too much time, they look for a way out or put it away to complete the task last minute.

I decided that something I could do is be encouraging to students about the struggle to get started and keep going, but also scaffold the task by breaking it down into simple do this first, second, next…to help them grasp the process of completing work. I also include an estimated time to complete each piece to help them see the process to reach the final task.

What do others think about this? What do you find helps students?
