Managing a project is like driving a car.  The composition of skills and experience required to manage and lead projects and their teams well takes time and effort.

  • The foundation or technical skills required to plan and document the project is like learning how to turn on the car and run functions when needed like the windshield wipers or blinkers.
  • Executing and controlling the project is like driving the car down the road, and using the right functions at the right time.
  • Monitoring and controlling risk is similar to proactive safe driving. We watch the environment and people around us, and we are constantly looking forward and behind us to making strategic decisions to ensure a successful journey.
  • To run large or complex projects successfully, people must practice and gain experience over time and with instruction, just like learning how to drive a car well and safely.
