Extend Activity #5 – Like Driving a Car
Since project management encompasses such a broad assortment of activities, mastery of the role requires a wide range of component skills, including a combination of technical, interpersonal, and leadership skills. This list of component skills includes:
- Project Planning: ability to create a comprehensive plan – using work breakdown structure, Gantt charts, resource allocation, and risk management planning.
- Time Management: efficiently allocating and managing time to ensure project stays on schedule – using critical path analysis, schedule development, and time tracking.
- Communication: ensure clarity and understanding while developing relationships.
- Leadership: inspiring and guiding the project team.
- Problem-Solving: making wise decisions to overcome project challenges.
- Negotiation: reaching agreements and resolving conflicts.
- Budgeting and Resource Management: efficiently managing all project resources.
- Client and Stakeholder Management: building and maintaining positive relationships.
- Technical Proficiency: solid understanding of the industry and project.
These skills are not all quickly or easily learned, so they are things we must ensure we are regularly providing opportunities for students to develop these skills. We must also guide and mentor new project managers as they learn these skills with experience and time – then they will be ready to “drive the car” with mastery.
