Extend Activity #7 – Your Metaphor
This is a bit of challenge to find a picture that represents my own metaphor but I suppose I could look at outer space and our galaxy. I could think of myself as perhaps the sun in a solar system and that the planets, moons, etc that surround are my students. Each of students are different shapes, sizes and contain different elements or information in this case and are of course all at different distances away from their center which would represent me. The planets that are closer (not just sitting close physically) but who spend the time to learn, get to know me and ask questions in and outside of the class get more rays of sunlight from me (information). The planets/students that are a bit further away and have some small conversations with me get some light but not as much as the closer planets. And of course we have our planets that are far off into the distance that are there, take on some of the sun’s light at times but are not always engaged.
When I think of my classroom, I try to spend an equal amount of time with each student but it’s the students during breaks and after class that take the time to to chat that get the best experience in the course. I make it known that I am available and always around to chat… not sure about course material but also industry questions and even on occasion just someone they want to talk to for general advice.
