I bring this metaphor from a wonderful YouTube clip:

My way to influence and motivate my students is through friendship. A teacher who the students are encouraged to address their issues beyond class boundaries. Most of my students are international students who seek to stay in this country. We discuss social challenges, especially those relevant to immigration. I tell my immigration story and the challenges my family endured to settle in our new home country. My classes became a mix of educational and social activities that kept me close to my students.
