Finding your Fit – Foundation of Mathematics
This semester I am teaching Foundation of Mathematics to students in the Office Administration program. Students come to course with varying levels of math skills. To help students understand and practice, I have found some resources using a Google search “solving for x” and H5P studio. In H5P studio I searched for algebra. With the google search, I looked at videos with closed captioning. Khan Academy is a great resource that has many videos for Math. Solving for x is a foundation skill that is used in everyday life and other courses students will take so it’s important that they understand and get the practice before moving forward. The mix of instructor lecture, video and interactive practice will walk students through the steps and provide practice to ensure they understand the material.
To start off the lesson, I would give a brief lesson introducing the topic. To reinforce the concept and the steps, I would have students watch an introductory video from Khan Academy:
Why we do the same thing to both sides: Multi-step equations
At this point, I would have students work on some introductory questions with a classmate to practice. Once they are comfortable with the intro questions, I would have students watch this next video that builds on the 1st video and works through examples.
Once students have practiced and watched both videos, they can test their knowledge with the following H5P studio activity.
