Teaching and learning are two sides that come together with a purpose, but both the teacher and the learner change as part of the shared result. Maybe it’s because I’m thinking in the back of my mind about what I’m going to make for dinner (as a mental procrastination from finishing the module), but this seems like fusion cooking to me. As much as I know where I want the learner to arrive, where they start from is not always part of the plan, and this can result in happy surprises like an unexpected note of ginger on BBQ ribs or a potent, meaty umami flavour on grilled tofu. Teaching and learning and fusion cooking requires an understanding of principles but also a willingness to get creative at times, to balance careful planning with spontaneity as it suits. Both, at least in my ongoing experience, are cross-cultural ventures that glean wisdom, experience, and flavour from both spheres!

I can go on, but now I’m hungry.
