Geert Hofstede – 5 Cultural Dimensions
I started off going through the repositories listed. I decided on looking for more information on Geert Hofstede as background information as to why these dimensions were formed. I wanted to provide the students with context vs just textbook info.
I started with https://core.ac.uk/ – searched using the Words Hofstede, Cultural Dimensions, Hofstede Chart, Images, and then I realized I needed to use a Boolean search (using those terms) Cultural Dimension and Hofstede (or else I got results ie: Cultural Dimension and Alcohol – and that was a whole rabbit hole there). There were many articles but I found many of them to be in a different language and I couldn’t translate. Maybe there was an English only article button – I’ll have to look more.
I then searched https://www.merlot.org (not my favorite wine) however, it was intriguing to me and I’ll never forget the name of repository. (Side note – I wonder if they named it that specifically so we would remember) Interesting enough I found an article that gave me insight as to why Geert settled on these five cultural dimensions. I did like the feature in Merlot – more articles like this – very “Amazonish” so that was useful to continue digging.
I actually continued my search although I was quite happy with the other article to the Ecampus open library repository. Wow the options that presented itself were “huuuugggeeee”. So many choices – I really had to use the filtering system on the left hand side and the boolean operators to narrow it down. I did like the “fill in the title” search when I typed in cultural dimensions and Hofstede … it gave me suggestions – “understanding”. So I will definitely be using all three of these repositories in the future.
