I am but one lens…

The best metaphor for me is that of a camera lens. I aim to bring into focus the critical concepts for students, helping draw attention to certain points of light. However, the beholder still assesses what it is they are taking in. A lens also provides a perspective that may not have been immediately visible to passersby with the naked eye. Lenses can contract, but they can also expand or pan out to allow for a broader view. When we pause in class to take in all aspects of a topic, or extend a class activity, we are opening the shutter so that the prolonged exposure may create new and lasting images in the mind.
