I could lose myself for days in here!
I approached the topic of looking at the concept of inequity in health care – to find appropriate materials, I explored several OER repositories, including Criticalcommons.com, The Internet Archive, Wikimedia Commons and the resources available through the Library at St. Lawrence College.
Admittedly, I this search took me down a rabbit hole. Like a kid in a candy store, I wandered from my strict search terms to find resources for many other projects. I’ve added so many bookmarks to go back and explore! This was a really helpful exercise.
So, for my introductory look at health inquity, I’d like to start with a clip from the TV show Superstore which I found on Critical Commons. This provides a realistic look at challenges related to access in health care.
The next link is inspirational – designed to show our international students – to show how barriers can be overcome around the world. This features the voice and story of a successful, African female physician who is addressing equity issues with health quality.
Then we turn our gaze to Canada and our current day situation – bringing the real challenge of equity and COVID-19 to the forefront with a radio program from The Current on the impact of COVID on communities of colour in Canada.
Finally, we can turn to an open source e-text on Canadian Medicare available from the SLC library, where we can take a deeper dive into how our current system of care contributes to equity challenges.
