Indigenous courses. WIIFM?

  • Learning how to appropriately and respectfully communicate and engage with Indigenous people is important. There are offensive phrases and terms that should never be used with an Indigenous or non-Indigenous person. Be better informed about this or risk seriously offending someone and hurting a relationship.
  • Debunk and deconstruct stereotypes surrounding Indigenous people that many have learned from media.
  • Education was used as a tool of assimilation against Indigenous people. These courses are a good opportunity to mend that relationship by learning about FNMI (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) people of Canada.
  • Recognize the important role of Indigenous Peoples in shaping Canada historically
  • Learning about colonization and assimilation will help one understand the many issues and barriers facing Indigenous people today.
  • Understanding the legal and political issues surrounding land rights and treaties that are presented in the news will make you a better-informed person.
