In order to improve learning and retention of students while fostering critical thinking, I chose to leverage a technology-enabled solution in the form of a browser-based mind mapping tool – modified open source tiddlywiki. The decision to integrate this technology stemmed from my experience  in continuous education in the IT Sector. Recognizing the need for an engaging platform for note taking that could accommodate diverse learning styles, and promote active participation among students.

 

Empathising with Learners:

 

To empathise with learners, I conducted a thorough needs assessment, using my children, and gathered insights through interviews with students, and observation. I sought to understand their preferences, challenges, and learning objectives. Through this process, I identified a common challenge among students: the need for effective tools to organise complex information in this information age, make connections between concepts, and enhance comprehension; they all use or have access to laptops in class.

 

Learner Challenge:

 

Based on feedback from previous students, the learner challenge identified the malleability of the tiddlywiki tool; in this case adding the mind mapping functionality.This provides the ability of students to develop critical thinking, and information organisation skills…. While note taking. Students expressed a desire for a user-friendly and intuitive platform that could streamline the process of notetaking.

 

Ideating and Prototyping:

 

Based on the insights gathered, I proceeded to ideate and prototype the technology creation. I brainstormed various features and functionalities that would address the identified challenge, such as:

– Intuitive drag-and-drop interface for creating and editing mind maps.

– Collaboration features to facilitate group work and peer feedback.

– Integration of multimedia elements to enhance engagement and comprehension.

– Customization options for personalising mind maps based on individual learning preferences.

– Accessibility features to accommodate diverse learners, including keyboard shortcuts and screen reader compatibility.

 

I developed wireframes and prototypes to visualise the user interface and gather feedback from stakeholders, including students and educators. Iterative testing and refinement were conducted to ensure usability, functionality, and alignment with learning objectives.

 

Planned Implementation:

 

The planned implementation involves integrating the technology-enabled solution into the curriculum as a supplementary learning tool. I will provide training and support to both students and educators to ensure effective adoption and utilisation of the mind mapping tool. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation will be conducted to assess the impact on learning outcomes and identify areas for improvement. This happens with every new class.

 

In summary, the decision to utilise a technology-enabled solution was driven by my desire to be effective at studying for IT certification exams. It later branched out to helping my children study for their exams and finally to the general student population.The iterative process of ideation, prototyping, and planned implementation ensures that the solution is tailored to meet the needs of students while fostering a collaborative and engaging learning environment.
