My defined learner challenge was to help students understand and comprehend the concept of relevant information.  This is something they typically struggle with and is a skill that is very useful in their business careers.

When I considered why they may struggle with this I considered that:

  • This would be a new concept to them where they would most likely not have seen this concept before
  • Have problems relating to the concept because the text and other examples they have are very academic in nature
  • Students often need to see a concept a couple of different ways before it clicks.

So the idea was to develop a tool that they could use to help them work through the concept in a way that relates to them.   I selected a problem relatable to all students, is it better to ride the bus to school or drive.

Using a Office Whiteboard, I created a whiteboard (see attached) with sticky notes that have information on them.   Their job is to sort the information.

This task would be introduced at the end of a class, giving a description of the concept.  Their homework would be to sort the information into relevant, not relevant and sunk cost.

We would start the next class discussing what they came up with.

This discussion should be more relatable to them because they have had time to think, reason, struggle and determine.   It will hopefully imitate good conversation and in the end, solidify the concept for the students.
