Learner Challenge: Engaging Students in Online Discussion

I am wondering how to engage students in group discussion and keep track of individual contributions to the group process. I am hoping to explore Microsoft Teams and/or Google Hang Outs, which I hope has the option to view previous versions. However, students may feel intimidated to contribute if they think marks are attached to their contribution.
