If you want to learn to drive a car you need to take a test, drive  a road test and then do the highway test.  This is a process, which could take several years.  Then you have to practice and practice and practice.  Sometimes when you think you have it, you make a mistake which could cause accidents.  You have to pay keen attention to those on the road and have your eyes, ears and feet all ready in this process as everyday could be different.  In Human Resources Management, the concept of Discipline is just like this.  It can take years for the policies and procedures to be ready and then you may need to change based on what is happening in the environment.  It is progressive in some cases and will require one process to another process.  Then you must practice and nothing is the same in any day even to the same misconduct.  Then there is the documenting and more documenting – just when you think you have learnt to drive the car there is more process and more paper.  The company must tell its staff to keep documents on file as insurance should a matter go to court and so it is with driving, one must have insurance just in case something goes to court.

Discipline in the workplace is a contentious issue just like that of driving a car.  There are speed limits, highway rules, yield rights, turning right at the red light, watching out for the speed cameras and the red light cameras.  There are lot of rules and regulations and so it is with Discipline in the workplace.
