Like Driving a Car: Building Modules
In my role as a Digital Learning Specialist I educate faculty members on the use of Modules for organizing their course content. This concept can be like driving a car for them as they know their course material inside and out and sometimes it can be hard to bring it back to the basics. There have been times when faculty members are not sure how to organize their Modules as they aren’t sure how to look at their course content from this perspective. One example that comes to mind is when I was speaking with a dance instructor and she expressed that Modules are not really relevant for her course. I explained that Modules can be thought of as the main topics that the course looks at and asked her how she breaks down the course, or dance(s), for students (ie. introduction, warm up, main steps, cool down, etc). By reminding her of the different “topics” or ideas that might be covered in her course, she was able to better grasp how to organize her course into Modules.
