A skill in nuclear medicine that is like driving a car is drawing a radioactive dose. There are many unique aspects to this much like getting in the driver’s seat for the first time. Many different senses help one drive. You must get used to the proper positions of your hands on the wheel. A good view of the mirrors. Appropriate levels of pressure applied to the brakes and gas pedals. We must drive while always making small adjustments to our senses so we do it safely and well.

When we are drawing our radioactive dose. There are many safety features that we must get accustomed to. The lead glass, the lead shield, the capping block. The syringe is now more difficult as the glass is between us and the radioactive material – much like a windshield. As we are using our hands we must make small adjustments on the plunger of the syringe pulling in or pushing back like the pedals of a car. If we don’t plan accordingly, we may cause an accident much like misusing them in a car. Over time things are second nature like driving where we can solve complex problems by not consciously thinking of the minor details when we first attempt to do it.
