Like Driving a Care: Acquiring Affective Skills vs Technical Skills
When it comes to considering mastery of skills within the dental hygiene program, the mastery of technical clinical skills comes to mind easily. We break down the technical skills into a step-by-step process. The clinical instructor, who is often a practicing dental hygienist, must overlook their “expert blind spot” for a number of weeks as the students work through the steps. The topic is well documented in the literature; it has been and continues to be explored and studied. I would like to focus on the mastery of an affective skill, therefore, rather than a technical skill for this exercise. An affective skill that requires mastery by the health profession student is the concept of life long learning. This would be a difficult concept for students to grasp because they are currently enrolled in education, and immersed in the learning process. How can a student grasp or master a skill that they will not actually need until the future, following graduation?
