  1. Explain what concept is like driving a car.

Writing a report is like driving a car.  There are various concept, skills and things to understand when a student is able to write a complete report.

      2. Explain the component skills required to master this concept.

To master the concept of writing an essay, a lab report or even a coherent paragraph, students need to have the ability to write sentences and connect these ideas to other statements that support the main idea with examples and details.   For example, when writing a scientific lab report, students need to first be able to read and understand other reports and things like an introduction, an abstract and the methods.  Once students can read and understand other reports, it’s crucial they can write sentences that are grammatical and coherent.  Again reading and researching come into play and note taking, paraphrasing and summarizing are all skills which take years to master for students.

3. Explain four approaches or strategies that you can use to foster mastery learning in your students.

a)  I will work with the students in reading (Blooms taxonomy in understanding)  a sample report and answering questions so the students will be able to understand the components of a lab report and which each part contains.  Students can work in small groups as some students may know and they can learn from one another. Many students benefit from reading and hearing what a report is and all the parts of it.

b)  It’s important to work with the students on the data analysis and what these results mean.  This strategy helps students to understand what the results show and how graphs are depicted and how to interpret the results.  The method of scaffolding and letting the students apply what they’ve learned so far.

c)  Writing a correct hypothesis that reflects the results and makes an educated guess isn’t always easy but we are getting into analysis / applying into “Blooms taxonomy” now.  This type of report works a bit backwards as we give the students the data and they write the report.

d) One thing we can’t as teachers forget is to provide differentiated instructional supports and often some individualized instruction and support  that fits each student’s needs. Students learn at different rates and under different learning conditions and mastery. I’m well aware of this and so I use a lot of group work plus interactive assignments, discussions, videos etc.
