Making Instructions Easier
The Challenge – The drive to use/adopt technology into the courses I teach is similar to everyone in this workshop – making our learners more successful. In using the tools to guide this decision – such as the Empathy Map – I validated what I already knew — learners are focusing on learning, life and competing responsibilities present today.
Collaboration – Historically, the rise in educational technology has been exponential. These are platforms as Padlet, social media, videos, interactive systems – just to name a few.
The Gatekeeper – In my analysis and knowing my student demographics – verified by applying the SECTIONS process – I wanted a tool that was easy to navigate, readily available, mobile, and mimics me giving instructions to an online learner.
The Solution – SCREENCAST-O-MATIC. This is a video platform that allows me to create micro videos and upload to the LMS. Yes, I could use the LMS integrated video feature but I am also attempting to highlight other learning tools.
The Plan – Moving forward, Screencast-o-matic will be used to create micro instructional videos for assignments which will have instructions, expectations, research areas to focus on content retrieval, and potentially samples/previous work. This will be done with the idea that learners can go back and review/complement written instructions but also ‘see’ how I will begin the task or my recommendations. I have created a few of these micro videos and the feedback has been positive.
