As a professor, I have the privilege of being in a student’s life temporarily. This is kind of like holding a bunch of helium balloons in my hand. Over the course of one term or throughout their program, I have the privilege of holding, leading, and guiding my students (figuratively…obviously). I help them cover and understand course content and extend their learning beyond the classroom. However, ultimately, my purpose as a professor is to release them. The visual metaphor I selected is that of balloons being gloriously released. Like these balloons, each of my students will take flight and carry with them the lessons I have taught them. My role is to provide them with the tools or teach them how to find the answers they will need to succeed in their flight to other courses, programs on to new and exciting careers.
