Metaphor – Teaching and Comedy
I think of teaching as being similar to performing stand-up comedy.
Comedians and teachers are observers of the world, they interact with people on a daily basis; comedians and teachers are knowledgeable of the world around them and can make interesting links and connections where others may not see them. Comedians and teachers need to think on their feet, to be able to improvise if something isn’t working. Comedians and teachers have to be able to connect with their audience, and they have to be comfortable with failure. Comedians and teachers must be able to tell stories, to share their insights, and to make their audience think things they have never thought before. Comedians and teachers are always honing their craft and are always trying to improve their performances.
