When we talk about our sphere of influence in the health promotion field, we will use the diagram of concentric circles getting larger as the influence grows, extending from the individual in the middle, through to supported public policy on outer circle showing the greatest reach. However, a different approach and analogy could be the idea of umbrellas protecting/shading/providing coverage for everything below. The umbrellas represent the greatest sphere of influence which is supportive public policy – if this is strongly in place, it provides support and coverage for everything beneath. The people, the objects and the smaller forms below all feel the benefit of this protection/influence. If the big umbrella isn’t there to support, all aspects below will be exposed and could make it more difficult to thrive.
