A concept that students have had a difficult time grasping is the All-or-none principle. An analogy that I have used would be

• An action potential is like pushing down dominos. Once there is enough energy to knock over the first domino, it starts the cascade of dominos falling one after another. However, if there is not enough energy to push over the first domino, none of the rest of the dominos will fall over.
