My metaphor for my teaching is coaching. Perhaps this is an overly simple metaphor, but it one that I really like. I always view my class as my team. We’re in it together, and it’s my job to teach them new skills and refine the skills they already have. Good coaches, like good teachers, are able to adjust their coaching style and techniques based on the needs of individual athletes, as well as how the season is going for the team and individual athletes. The end goal is always a successful season (semester) and for the athlete to advance onto a higher level of competition (next semester, graduation, a career etc.). Sports, and the best coaches I’ve had, have also taught me about things like respect, teamwork, communication, etc., and those things are also things that good educators teach – usually leading by example.
