When I began this work I wanted to address that students were not gaining the skills I was hoping from my paper and pen exercise that accompanied their weekly reading. This log was time consuming and was challenging for many students to understand what critical engagement with the reading meant in this context. I also noticed that students were having some trouble with group work and engagement with their peers and wanted some additional structure in their engagement. As a result, I narrowed the empathy map to explore how to best assess student reading comprehension while also exploring more creative ways for them to engage with one another. Perusall than became the obvious choice to use to address this gap. It is a centrally supported technology at my institution and it is designed to track and explore student engagement with the reading. It will integrate well into the online LMS and has a relatively small learning curve. It does require some strong engagement from me, as their instructor, but this is also helpful as I can really draw out in each reading the components I need them to address and discuss the why with one another. Overall it will take about 24 hours to fully set up the activity and hopefully help to address the gaps and concerns identified in the empathy map.
