I think that in academic writing, mastering the art of referencing & citing is a lot like driving a car. Students who have never encountered citation or referencing before are like fish out of water. They attempt to do their citations and reference page last, and struggle just to put a simple in-text citation together. They often don’t think about this until they are close to a writing deadline, and then struggle significantly, which leads to plagiarism issues as well as trouble meeting the assignment outcomes and deadlines.

Component skills:

  • A basic understanding of citation & references and their importance in academic writing
  • Knowledge of what a credible academic resource looks like and where they are found
  • Ability to identify the difference between common knowledge and  information that needs to be referenced
  • Understanding of what types of bibliographic information are crucial to preparing a citation / reference
