My journey has been one of exploration, discovery, and growth as I looked into the realm of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) framework. My curiosity was around enhancing students’ learning experiences, so I asked the research question: “Does the implementation of a modified mindmapping browser as a note-taking tool enhance students’ learning outcomes compared to traditional linear note-taking methods?” This question emerged from a desire to understand the challenges students face in organising and retaining information in this technological education environment.

To begin, I explored studies examining the effectiveness of mindmapping tools in education, as well as research on student learning preferences and information processing. This background research provided valuable insights into the potential benefits and limitations of using a modified mindmapping browser as a teaching strategy.

Based on my research, I would break the students into 2 groups – with mindmaps and without mindmaps. Then implement  modified mindmapping browsers in the classroom setting, collect data on students’ note-taking habits and learning outcomes, and analyse the results to evaluate the impact of the intervention. I would use a two pronged approach, combining qualitative observations and analysis with quantitative assessments of learning outcomes to provide a comprehensive understanding of what is going  on.

For dissemination, I would share my research with colleagues and educators through institutional channels and online platforms. By disseminating my work widely, I would be able  to contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning, inspire other educators to adopt these innovative teaching strategies, and foster a culture of evidence-based pedagogy within the academic community.

As I visualise the direction of this SoTL research project, I see it as a journey of discovery and collaboration, with the ultimate goal of enhancing student learning experiences and promoting effective teaching practices. The image below represents the path ahead, symbolising adaptation in communicating information (knowledge) in this new information age.
