Statistics:  What is in it for Marketing Math Haters

Why you should be interested in learning Stats. What is the relevance for my Marketing Students? How will it connect to future activities and beyond?

Why you should be enrolled in the course.

When I initially see my Marketing students in my stat’s class I am well aware that they don’t want to be in a Math class let alone a Stats class and that the first thought on their mind is “Why do I need to take Statistics?  I mean I am a words person, I am in marketing, and what do I need this for? “
My first response is generally …. Well you HAVE to take this class in order to obtain your diploma.
Of course this response hardly inspires the keen learning experience I am hoping for so we delve a little deeper.

You are marketers and as such you are trying to get your target audience to purchase something, use something, and support something.  In other words you are trying to influence your target audience. In order to do this you must know what your target audience wants to hear, what they currently do or what they currently think.

How do you learn this vital information?  You learn it through data.  How can you make sense of this data?  Through Statistics.

So it is a marketer’s job to know their audience and in order to know your audience you must gather and organize data and information about that audience.  Which is exactly what Statistics does.
