When teaching French grammar, specifically how to conjugate verbs in the passé composé tense, I like to break down the process into components. 1) identify whether the verb is conjugated with avoir or être as an auxiliary 2) conjugate the verbs avoir or être in the présent tense 3) provide the past participle form of the main verb 4a) if être is used as the auxiliary, the past participle form has to agree with the subject of the sentence 4b) if avoir is used as the auxiliary, the past participle form has to agree with a direct object that precedes it. In my teaching, I make a point of demonstrating these steps with sample exercises. I then get students to work in groups and take turns to walk other students through the process.
