This was an exciting exercise.

I recently worked with a couple of my co-workers from different departments on a project to design and implement a job aid to help production employees with wire strip length verification. This required us to develop, design, test, and implement an idea within our production process.

Answering the following parts-

    • Were they part of or outside of your discipline?
    • How did your skills compare with theirs?
    • Do they offer a diverse perspective that is different from yours? If so, how does this help improve your teaching?

DD- Yes and no, as ME and QE can be part of a broader manufacturing engineering discipline. I led the creative process of determining a solution while having the skills to design and make the templates from the proposed idea. They offered a diverse perspective to ensure the solution was simple enough, which could be made in-house instead of the absolute best solution, which might have an extended lead time.

JS-They could be considered an intersection between in-class and hands-on learning disciplines. They have great product and process-specific knowledge and a good understanding of what can be sustained in a production environment. Their focus was to ensure the solution fits the current practices and is sustainable in the long run.

Identify patterns and gaps:

In terms of communication, in-person meetings are where most productive discussion occurs, while emails help set the project agenda and document communication. MS Teams were used to overcome the challenge of being unable to meet in person. It could be challenging to rely heavily on in-person interaction, and alternative options should always be considered.
Missing from the table- There was a missing team member, namely any production employee, which would have helped us speed up the testing phase with a dedicated resource.
