This usually is not a difficult task for our class as they are usually highly motivated to learn the skills of helping another. However, I recently had a student share with me that she did not want to be a counsellor but would rather work in the area of community development so she felt that my courses were somewhat irrelevant to her career goals. We then had a conversation about how being a helper was a life skill and could be used with friends, family and ourselves. Ideas of empathy, and active listening will make us good communicators, better colleagues, more understanding partners, patient parents… the list goes on.
