WIIFM

As a course instructor in the accelerated PSW program, I am often asked by students why they need to know anatomy and physiology in so much depth. I have compiled a list of reasons below.

As a practicing PSW, it is important that you understand the anatomy and physiology of the human body

  • To be able to identify abnormal findings
  • To be able to identify emergent/urgent situations
  • To understand the client/patient/resident’s lived experience with their condition
  • To communicate effectively with members of the interprofessional healthcare team (verbally/written)
  • To be able to determine expected vs abnormal findings for common conditions
  • To understand the lived experience of aging
  • To be able to answer client/patient/resident’s questions of the questions of their family members
  • To promote health and comfort
