When you communicate effectively (including via email), you have the following outcomes:

  • communication goal(s) achieved: audience opens your email, understands your purpose, acts accordingly (for example a specific subject line, immediate statement of your purpose leads to response to exactly what you intend (your purpose))
  • first impressions positive: audience has positive view of you – at minimum – as a communicator, for example this is a a vital skill employers and admissions offices are looking for
  • clarity of message: refining your own communication helps you to deepen your understanding of the message contents and enhance its clarity overall, for example when you can edit your own message, you often have to return to its main content and therefore require you to revisit and achieve greater understanding
  • flexibility of genres: thinking of your purpose and audience allows you to effectively use a variety of genres, for example applying for a job versus requesting a refund

This article explains the value of clear communication in the workplace. (Note: I’m only adding this link b/c I can’t submit without a URL – not sure if I’m missing something?)
