In BUSI-1005 (Introduction to Business Processes), one of the assignments is a group project that includes three parts. On a few occasions I have had students ask why they have to work in groups with other people rather than doing the project individually.

I explain to the students:

  • One of the most important skills in business, or any career for that matter, that they will need to get good at is their ability to interact with other people.
  • Regardless of whether they are meeting in-person, meeting online, sending an email, sending a text, making a phone call, etc., they are communicating and dealing with other people.
  • They are going to be on teams and in some cases, they may be working with people that they don’t get along with or see eye-to-eye. They are going to have to deal with different personality styles.

To further help students relate what is in it for them as far as people skills are concerned, I also give the students my own personal example. Back in 1991, I almost got fired from my job as a General Manager for a manufacturing company because my human relations skills left a lot to be desired. I finally came to the realization that I had to do something about that, not just to save my job but also further my career. Therefore, I decided to enroll myself in the best program I could find to help me with that, the Dale Carnegie Course – Effective Communications and Human Relations. I paid for the course myself; I did not ask my employer to pay for it. As a result, I was able to save that job as well as seize other opportunities that became available throughout my career.
