When teaching project management in small groups to students who are not intending to be project managers, as part of a larger program I actually get asked this.

The question I get is what good is this to me, I want to be a …….:

I turn this around and actually ask the group and we get some good answers:

  • Project Managers seem organized- I want to look like that at my job
  • I think we will all have to work on projects someday
  • I think this is good practice for being a manager
  • Emails/meetings are hard, it’s good to get some practical advice on how to do these
  • I want a project on my resume
  • I need experience, and this project gives me that
  • I need skills to organize my work

I usually add, that being organized, good at communicating and able to do projects, are the skills that make you shine in a lot of different roles.
