Students everywhere collectively groan when told they will need to write an essay. I spend significant time in class trying to build a case for the research essay. So, I think this works really well for a “What’s In It For Me” list.

WIIFM – the Research Essay process

  • learn to use the library databases – helps improve the outcome of most other assignments between now and the time you graduate
  • learn to search the databases using proper keywords – will improve your Google results too!
  • learn to assess information resources for credibility – avoid fake news and invalid information – applies to personal information needs and to academic needs, helps improve your credibility, often improves overall grade when you’re using good quality, credible source materials
  • organize your information into a coherent essay  – improves your overall communication skills, and helps you to learn how to organize information for a variety of different writing and communication tasks.

Students seem to respond the most to my final point:

  • How many of you like to win arguments? The ability to research a topic, assess & select the best sources on that topic, and prepare information in an organized way will be beneficial in winning arguments for years to come.
