I struggled with this activity. My first inclination was to post images of real student learning or activities I’ve done but that was far too literal.

I opted for an image of Christmas lights… not the fancy LED, remote controlled lights, but the strands of lights that I grew up with. They are warm colours on a green line. They feel safe and provide comfort. I hope that my classroom and teaching style does the same for my students. Maybe I can be the energy moving through those lights… or the content I teach can be that energy. Passion is power.

The metaphor is furthered when I think about the impact of one broken or missing bulb! Often, we spent every November testing the lights before putting them up. We had to be sure there were no missing pieces or burnt-out bulbs, otherwise the whole strand or half the strand wouldn’t work. This is important to me in my classroom, I want to be sure that for each student, all the needed pieces are there and they can shine bright! But as a whole, a class that is ultimately a cohort, I want my students to be able to work together and shine brightly as well. I hope that after my courses, we can celebrate and show off our knowledge, our growth, and our warmth.
