The image linked here contains the ingredients necessary for a night’s dinner. I use the metaphor of cooking to illustrate teaching.

Both cooking and teaching involve preparation, creativity, adaptability, and the ability to handle unexpected situations.  Even when a teacher is fully prepared for their day’s lesson, unexpected challenges may arise, requiring them to adjust their teaching approach to suit their students’ needs. This parallels cooking, where adjustments are made to recipes based on dietary restrictions or preferences; for instance, reducing sugar or substituting ingredients. Sometimes, modifying a course syllabus can lead to positive teaching outcomes, similar to creating a new dish that delights everyone.

For students, some may perceive your teaching method as effective, while others may find it dull. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching. Sometimes, not only do teachers need to adapt their methods, but students may also benefit from creating their own study guides to enhance their understanding of concepts. This aligns with the process of cooking, where a chef may believe their dish is exceptional, but the customers may find it lacking flavour, leading to adjustments by adding seasoning.
