The 3 Keys Characteristics of SoTL
- Grounded in a question and researcher’s expertise:
By asking interesting questions that typically come from a challenge with teaching or with students’ learning or the interface between the two.
Finding a design and methodology that reflects the nature of the question and the nature of the expertise of the researcher or researchers.
- Sharing findings publicly
– Going public with what you are learning is a critical piece of SoTL work.
– Going public can be speaking with your colleagues about it at the most informal level all the way up to publishing papers or books.
– The range of ways to go public with SoTL work is fruitful and helps move the discussion about teaching and learning forward.
- Building knowledge beyond one’s institution
– Redesigning, rebooting, or changing courses, assignments, assessments, or even a whole program based on what you learn about what your students are thinking and what they are doing is a critical piece of SoTL work.
